These are the most influential Latinos of 2017, according to Time magazine
An organizer-activist, a singer, an undocumented woman, the Pope, the new leader of the Democratic Party and a Brazilian scientist are among the most influential Latino leaders this year, according to the publication's annual list of the "most influential people."
Carmen Perez was one of the four women who organized the successful Women's March on Washington following the inauguration of Donald Trump; all four were recognized by Time. The event, which had an impact around the world, "is the rebirth of the women's movement," says the magazine's profile of the women.

Jeanette Vizguerra, the undocumented Mexican who took refuge in a church in Dever to avoid deportation, has become the face of the millions of undocumented people in the United States who are afraid of the new administration. "She came to this country not to rape, murder, or sell drugs, but to create a better life for her family," the magazine explains.

Pope Francis reappears on the list of the most influential people. And he does so, in part, for his support of the most disadvantaged, including refugees, a theme that ignited the 2016 presidential election campaign in the United States.

Demi Lovato, the well-known American singer and activist whose father is of Mexican origin, is at 24 one of the biggest voices for "people to talk about mental illness and the stigma surrounding them." In addition, she has become a role model for people with eating disorders or addictions.

The Dominican Tom Perez has just been elected president of the Democratic National Committee, "one of the toughest jobs in the country," according to the magazine. Perez will seek to unite his party after its loss in the November elections, and to try to deliver it back to the White House.

Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos received the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to end war with the FARC. In the profile written by Ingrid Betancourt, she underscores how he's "bringing together friends and enemies to achieve what once seemed impossible: peace."

Guillem Anglada-Escudé is a Spanish astrophysicist, chosen by Time along with Natalie Batalha and Michaël Gillon, for his work to search for exoplanets in the universe. "We now know there are thousands of other, possibly inhabited, planets. Perhaps later in this century or in the next, we will even develop the technology to visit them."
